Lobby School workshops train students – novice and veteran – in proficiencies indispensable for effective in-the-field advocacy, legislative and administrative. We familiarize students with broad principles, processes, and practices common to lobbying everywhere.

The 6-volume 1,300-page Insiders Talk series of lobbying manuals provides detailed, step-by-step practice specifics vital to an effective lobbying campaign but beyond that which could be covered in a university semester, much less a 4-8 hour workshop.

Training consists of two tracks:

  • Track 1 is fundamentals for novices and a refresher for veterans. Insiders Talk manuals 2, 3, 4, and 6 apply. (Note: Manual 1 is for job seekers.)
  • Track 2 is for managers responsible for the performance of lobbyists, in-house and contract. Insiders Talk manual 5 applies.

Our workshops are multi-state with contributions from lobbyists across the US. Training focuses on processes universally required by the US Constitution and techniques of effective selling practiced everywhere.

Track 1, Day 1: How to Successfully Lobby State Legislatures

Track 1, Day 2: How to Successfully Lobby State Regulatory Agency Rulemaking (4 hours: $400) Download the agenda
You don’t have a law until the agency says you have a law. And you don’t know what the law means until the agency tells what it means. Agencies do both via rulemaking.  Lobby agency rulemaking to keep your legislative win, get more, or take away an opponent’s victory. Includes two skills development activities and Manual 6, Guide to Executive Branch Agency Rulemaking

Track 2: Managing Contract Lobbying for Senior Managers

Few clients know what to expect from their contract lobbyists much less how to ensure the quality of services for which they are paying. This workshop equips managers to evaluate the quality of services provided by contractors and, every bit as important, evaluate their own effectiveness as clients. Includes skills development activities, 1) client evaluation of contractor performance, 2) self-evaluation of client effectiveness, and Manual 5, Winning with Lobbyists, Professional edition (hardcover, 488 pages).

Class Size, Workbook, Certification

 Class Size My average class is 10, I cap class size at 20. Like a university special topics seminar or law school practicum, I focus on student competencies. To do this well, the class size is intentionally small.

Workbook (included): Digital copies of slides content, skills application exercises, and planning checklists.
